One of the characteristics of Spanish life that everone mentions is the schedule of the day. Our Spanish teacher said yesterday the phase "This afternoon at 7", which I think captures it perfectly.
The day looks something like this:
Get up at 8, rush out after a quick coffee and a roll. This morning I saw the queues of students going to school, not that much later than the schedule in the US.
11-12: a coffe and maybe a sandwich.
2:30 - 4: lunch, the most important meal. Shops close, even supermarkets.
4 :30 -7:00 wrap up the day's work.
7-9: ramble - it seems the whole city is on the street, walking, shopping etc.
9-11: supper or a show (depending on your need for sleep)
11-1: supper, if you went to a show or the evening has started, especially on the weekends. It is amazing to us how many shows start at 10:00 pm. It appears to me that sleep deprivation is common during the week and the weekends are for sleeping in.
How are we doing? Well, the breakfast is not as rushed, but lunch is at about 3:00, and supper is minor, about 9:00. We have shifted our clocks, and enjoying it, but you have not found us at the disco at 2 am yet...
