Yesterday we visited probably the most famous sites of Barcelona. It is a cathedral that is being built and is approximately 50% done. It is an amazing site and the stories abound with many of them centered around the designer, Gaudi. It was started in the late 1800's, was partly damaged during the Civil War, and now they are actively building it again. The inside of the church has a design based on the idea of pillars representing trees, it is quite amazing. However, I think that the outside façades are the most impressive. One façade is of the Nativity, with the Nativity scene being central. However there are also other sculptures including one of a soldier killing babies. Inside, interestingly, is a sculpture of a terrorist receiving a bomb from the devil.
My favorite is a more modern side begun in the 1950s. It is of the Passion, and has the various scenes. The pictures are of this side of the church. As you can see, they have the risen Christ as a bronze statue sitting well above it all. I guess he'll be looking down on the Carnaval festivities for this week. We celebrated Dijous gras and now we are going to watch the parades this evening.
