Carnival!

Saturday was parade day in Barcelona. We went to our neighborhood parade which consisted of a drum core made up of women with rollers in their hair and wearing house dresses. Children from the neighborhood dressed up and followed them through the streets. Later that day we went up to one of the northern neighborhoods where the city parade would be held. We went up early with the thought that we would grab a snack before the parade. Unfortunately, many other people had the same idea. Two hours before the parade started the streets and sidewalks were filled with people young and old dressed in costume. The parade lasted for about 1 ½ hours with each borough of the city represented. There were some floats, if there was a marching band, it consisted mostly of a drum corp and the majority of the presentations were people dressed in ethnic costumes with some of them doing a dance native to their culture. Today’s picture is a large group of young men and women doing what we think are a local dance. The people around were singing along to the music and were very familiar with it.
